[strongSwan] application exclusion from tunneling in android

Hi, The strongswan android app has a feature where in a particular app can be selected and its traffic will bypass the tunnel. Could someone briefly explain how is the traffic originating from this application identified and then sent outside the tunnel.
lets assume the android device is connected to a VPN gateway with the network 20.0.0.0 behind it. How does the app work such that HTTP traffic to 20.0.0.1 will enter the tunnel, but a ping or ftp to 20..0.0.1 will not enter the tunnel
a few tips, pointers to API would be great help. Does Java have the capability to associate an application with an IPSEC tunnel. My Java knowledge is bad
