A Happy New Year to you all!

after a longer pause of more than two months during which Martin
Willi and I were very busy with several strongSwan add-on projects
we proudly present the latest release 4.0.6 which offers the
following new features:

- IKEv1: Support for extended authentication (XAUTH) in combination
with ISAKMP Main Mode RSA or PSK authentication.

Both client and server side of the XAUTH protocol were implemented.
The handling of the user credentials can optionally be done by a
run-time loadable XAUTH module. By default user credentials are
stored in ipsec.secrets in the form of

   : XAUTH john "45!gQcib7#"

The following UML example scenarios are available:

which document the XAUTH use in combination with PSK or RSA Main Mode
authentication and optional ModeConfig Pull Mode exchange to obtain a
  Virtual IP.

- IKEv2: Support for reauthentication when rekeying

The new connection parameter reauth with the default value

forces a reauthentication of the peers during each IKE SA rekeying.

- IKEv2: Support for transport mode

   is now supported

- A lot of bug fixes related to byte order (e.g. MIPS32)

We expect to publish strongswan-4.1.0 towards the end of February 2007
which will be the first stable releasecombining IKEv1 and IKEv2.
At the same time strongswan-2.8.x will be put into maintenance mode
with bug fix support until the end of 2007.

Best regards

Martin Willi & Andreas Steffen
