No, the number of connections is not directly related to the number of
required threads.

No, the default is usually just fine for most setups.

Increasing the number of threads might help if your configuration
requires many blocking operation (fetching CRL/OCSP, authenticating with
RADIUS etc.), or if you have a system with many processor cores.
